UN Approves $76 Million Budget for MINURSO Mission

The United Nations General Assembly has allocated approximately $76 million to the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for the period from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, a significant increase from the previous year’s budget of $61 million.

The decision, made on June 28 during the General Assembly’s 78th session, comes despite concerns over unpaid contributions from member states.

The UN urged these countries to fulfill their financial obligations, emphasizing the strain delayed payments place on peacekeeping operations worldwide.

The increased budget will be allocated primarily to mission operations ($69 million), with additional funds designated for peacekeeping support, UN bases, and regional service centers.

While the UN cited inflation as a primary factor in the budget increase, the text of the resolution also expressed concern over harassment of MINURSO personnel by the Polisario Front.

Morocco, however, maintains that the Royal Armed Forces have effectively mitigated these threats.

Experts and analysts question the continued need for MINURSO in its current form, given Morocco’s progress towards regional autonomy and the evolving situation on the ground. They argue that reconsidering the mission’s role and mandate may be necessary.
