The European Union said it plans to elevate its partnership with Morocco in the coming weeks, after a decision by the European Court of Justice dealt a blow to the trade agreement the EU had with Morocco since 2019.

Friday’s decision is the final ruling after several appeals by the Commission, and the latest after a ruling by the Court in September 2021 that declared the fishing and agriculture agreements with Morocco invalid.

“ In close cooperation with Morocco, the EU firmly intends to preserve and continue strengthening close relations with Morrocco in all areas of the Morocco-EU Partnership, in line with the principle of pacta sunt servanda,” said a Joint Statement by President von der Leyen and High Representative/Vice-President Borrell.

The statement said the EU noted that the court upheld the validity of its agricultural agreement with Morocco for an additional year, as the European Commission reviews the implications of the judgments.
