Nearly 40 countries reaffirmed today their support for Morocco’s full sovereignty over its Sahara during the 57th session of the Human Rights Council at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
The group of countries from Africa (24), Asia(9), and America (4) expressed their support for the Kingdom’s territorial integrity in a statement delivered on their behalf by Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic, Héctor Virgilio Alcántara, during the general debate on the annual report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation of human rights in the world.
“Morocco is engaged since many years in constructive, voluntary and profound interaction with the United Nations human rights system, in particular the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), for the promotion and respect of human rights throughout its entire territory,” read the statement.
The group also welcomed the opening by several countries of consulates general in Dakhla and Laayoune, which constitute “a lever to promote economic cooperation and investment, benefiting the local population and regional and continental development.”
“The resolution of this regional dispute will contribute to achieve the legitimate aspirations of the African and Arab peoples in terms of integration and development, which is considered as an objective that Morocco continues to pursue and for which it makes sincere and ongoing efforts,” added the statement.
