30 MPs urge British foreign ministry to support Morocco’s autonomy plan

Thirty Members of the British Parliament from both the Labour and Conservative parties have united in a letter addressed to David Cameron, the Foreign Secretary, urging the United Kingdom to actively support the Moroccan autonomy plan in the Sahara region.

The letter, seen by Hespress, underscores the pivotal role the Sahara plays in global geopolitics and emphasizes the importance of bolstering alliances with stable nations like Morocco amidst the prevailing global turbulence.

Highlighting Morocco’s strategic significance in North Africa and its shared values with the UK, the MPs stress the need for proactive engagement to enhance regional stability and international security.

Citing the escalating conflict in the Middle East and its spillover effects, including the proliferation of terrorism and extremism, the letter emphasizes the urgency of resolving the Sahara issue to prevent further destabilization. It underscores the potential of the Sahara region for progress and stability, emphasizing the risks posed by separatism and the importance of strengthening Morocco’s proactive role in promoting security.

The MPs underscore Morocco’s efforts in combating extremism and its contributions to regional peace and prosperity, advocating for financial support to realize the region’s economic potential.

Drawing from their firsthand experiences visiting Morocco, including the Sahara, they express confidence in the viability of Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a pathway to lasting peace and stability.

They point out the broad international support for the autonomy plan and urge UK leadership to align with key allies in supporting it, warning against perpetuating the status quo that jeopardizes regional security.
