Algeria’s Minister of Irrigation, Taha Derbal, leveled an accusation against Morocco during the 19th International Water Forum held in Bali, Indonesia, claiming that the Kingdom is “intentionally and systematically draining dams along their western border.”

In a statement to El Khabar, an Algerian news outlet, Algeria’s Minister said, “We condemn what’s happening on our western borders,” stressing that they “will draw the attention of all international players in this vital sector.”

Derbal added that Algeria intends to “bring its concerns to the global stage to raise awareness and develop a rigorous plan to curb the aggravation practices in the neighboring country.”

For context, the Algerian Minister boycotted the speech of Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch at the 2nd International Water Forum and the presentation of the 8th Hassan II Great World Water Prize, which was awarded this year to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The decision to boycott the prize presentation came after Derbal learned that Akhannouch would be presenting the award, reported El Khabar.
