Tottenham Hotspur ‘set to allow 24-year-old to leave on free transfer’

Tottenham Hotspur reportedly reach the decision to allow a 24-year-old senior player to leave the club on a free transfer.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made the decision to part ways with Ryan Sessegnon on a free transfer.

When Spurs signed the left-sided player from Fulham for £25m in 2019, there had been high hopes that he would develop into a key player.

By the age of 19, he had contributed a phenomenal 25 goals and 28 assists from 120 appearances for the Cottagers, securing himself numerous accolades in the Championship and EFL in general.

He also enjoyed a season of Premier League football during 2018-19, chipping in with two goals and six assists from 35 appearances, but his transfer across London has proven to be a disaster.

Across a five-year period, the former England Under-21 international has made just 57 appearances in all competitions, contributing three goals and four assists.

The 2020-21 campaign was spent on loan at Hoffenheim, where he featured on 29 occasions, yet injuries have since prevented him from living up to his potential.

Spurs prepared to cut losses

Although Sessegnon accumulated 32 outings in the Premier League in the two seasons prior to 2022-23, he barely featured during Ange Postecoglou‘s first year in charge.

The solitary outing was a brief appearance during the FA Cup third round victory over Burnley in January before he suffered yet another significant hamstring injury.

Given Sessegnon’s initial transfer fee, it left it plausible that Spurs may look to extend the player’s contract past its expiry date of June 2024.

Instead, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the decision has been taken to allow Sessegnon to depart the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a free transfer.

Does Sessegnon have interest elsewhere?

At a time when Spurs want to put plans in place to significantly strengthen their squad in the summer, they are prepared to cut their losses on the Englishman.

Romano states that Sessegnon is attracting widespread interest from clubs in the Premier League and across Europe, although his preference is the former.

Despite his lack of game time during 2023-24, Sessegnon will still be regarded as an opportunity by clubs in a certain bracket, whereas the player will want a destination where he can play on a regular basis, if fit.

From Spurs’ perspective, Sessegnon is the third left-back option that has allegedly been made available for transfer, with Emerson Royal and Ben Davies also said to be free to leave for the right price.
