Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Monday appointed Vice President Mohammad Mokhber as the country’s interim president, following the death of President Ebrahim Raissi in a helicopter crash.
“In accordance with Article 131 of the Constitution, Mokhbar is responsible for leading the executive branch” and he must, in consultation with the heads of the legislative and judicial branches, organize “the election of a new president within a maximum of 50 days”, the head of state said in a statement.
Iran will observe five days of mourning following the death of President Ebrahim Raissi and seven others in a helicopter crash in the northwest of the country, announced Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“I announce five days of public mourning and offer my condolences to the dear Iranian people,” said the Islamic Republic’s most senior official in a statement issued a few hours after the announcement of the president’s death.
