Sean McVay on Matthew Stafford contract: Rams ‘want to work toward figuring that out’

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. — Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead addressed an NFL Network report from Thursday night’s broadcast of the NFL Draft, that quarterback Matthew Stafford is seeking an adjustment to his existing contract.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Stafford is looking for guaranteed money beyond the 2024 season. Stafford is guaranteed $31 million of the four-year, $160 million extension signed in 2022 after he led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory. After this season, he does not have any remaining money guaranteed by the team.

“I’ve had good dialogue with Matthew; we’ll keep those things in-house,” McVay said. “He’s been working with our guys, but we’ll keep those things in-house.”

McVay said that the Rams’ leaders — himself, Snead and vice president of football Tony Pastoors — have been discussing the situation.

Snead said the Rams are “definitely jacked to have Matthew as our QB.”

Neither McVay nor Snead could firmly say whether Stafford would be on-site at OTAs as football activities begin — they both said he has been working with Rams teammates, with McVay adding the Rams would “take it a day at a time, we’re going to try to figure it out.

“There’s nothing that’s more important than making sure that he feels appreciated and that he knows how much we love him and want him to lead the way,” McVay said, “and I think that commitment that I think he wants to have can be reciprocated. And we want to work toward figuring that out.”

Stafford, 36, is coming off one of the best seasons of his career after leading the Rams to a 10-win season during a year in which many analysts believed the Rams would be in “rebuild” mode. He threw for 3,965 yards and 24 touchdowns with just 11 interceptions in 15 games and was voted to the Pro Bowl. In a documentary produced by the Rams about Stafford and released this spring, Stafford said he wants to win multiple Super Bowls.
