Sharks hire former Rangers coach David Quinn as next head coach

The San Jose Sharks have hired David Quinn as head coach, the team announced Tuesday. Quinn was most recently the head coach of the New York Rangers from 2018-19 through 2020-21.

In New York, Quinn went 96-87-25 in the regular season. In the COVID-19 bubble play-in tournament in 2020, Quinn’s Rangers were swept in three games by the Carolina Hurricanes. That was the closest New York came to the playoffs under Quinn, who was fired after the 2020-21 season.

Before joining the Rangers, the 55-year-old Quinn went 105-68-21 at Boston University as the Terriers’ head coach. Quinn also played three seasons at BU from 1984-85 through 1986-87. New Sharks general manager Mike Grier also played at BU, but not with Quinn or for him.

In early July, the Sharks fired head coach Bob Boughner who went 67-85-23 and failed to reach the playoffs each year in San Jose. That move was announced before the hiring of Grier.
